AAPC author Kari Dunn Buron will be a keynote presenter at Minnesota's State Autism Conference sponsored by the Autism Society of Minnesota.  The conference runs April 29-May 2, 2015, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Minneapolis.

At this annual autism conference, speakers, educators, paraprofessionals, therapists, psychologists, professionals, employers, caregivers, parents and individuals on the spectrum come together to exchange knowledge and ideas focused on enhancing the lives of those touched by autism. There will be more than 20 breakout sessions. The last conference day, Saturday, May 2, is focused on the important issues of transition and employment. Keynote speakers include Dr. James Coplan, Dr. Patrick Schwarz, John Miller, and AAPC’s award-winning author Kari Dunn Buron, MS.

Kari’s presentation, Ain't Just Misbehavin': The Emerging Debate for Educators About the Neuroscience of Challenging Behavior, addresses issues that should be a part of every team discussion for all students who exhibit upsetting, confusing, challenging or violent behavior. The past 10 years have brought unprecedented developments in neuroscience related to social behavior and emotional understanding. These developments include information about social awareness, social attention, self-awareness, self-management and self-control. Research not only indicates that these abilities are brain-based, but that they can be taught.

With 30+ years of experience teaching K-12 students on the autism spectrum, Kari has also developed an autism spectrum disorders certificate program for educators at Hamline University and was a founding member of the Minnesota Autism Project. In 2003, she received a self-designed fellowship that allowed her to spend a year interviewing and working internationally with a number of scientists and researchers in the areas of neuroscience, social cognition, education and autism, with a focus on challenging behaviors. Kari has presented her work both nationally and internationally. In 2012, she was inducted into the Illinois State University Department of Education Hall of Fame.

Kari has authored and co-authored many books, including the now classic, The Incredible 5-Point Scale, an innovative method for helping individuals with ASD understand, rate and control their emotional reactions to everyday events. To date, this award-winning book has sold over 100,000 copies. Kari has since written several books using 5-point scales, including A 5 Is Against the Law! (2008 ASA literary award winner), a book aimed at behaviors that can spell trouble for adolescents and young adults who have difficulty understanding and maintaining social boundaries. Moreover, the Mom’s Choice Award winner When My Worries Get Too Big!, an easy-to-read children’s book is filled with opportunities for children to participate in developing their own self-calming strategies. Kari is also the co-editor of the textbook Learners on the Autism Spectrum: Preparing Highly Qualified Educators (2009 ASA literary award winner). Her latest work, Adalyn’s Clare, is an early chapter book about a highly anxious fourth grader and her social therapy dog, Clare.
