Dear Momma Bear,

Last Sunday was Mother’s Day. For most, it was a day just like every other day. We are tired. We are worried. We are stressed to the max, and we can’t catch a break. Laundry is piling up. Bills need to be paid. We need to drive our kiddos to the next therapy session or extracurricular activity. The list is never ending.

Here’s the thing, Momma Bear. It is time to take a break. Yes, you heard me right. It is time for you to stop what you are doing and take a break. Even if you have to lock yourself in the bathroom with your phone, a chocolate bar, and drink of your choice, give yourself a mommy time-out. You deserve it. You spend so much of your time taking care of everyone else that you end up neglecting a very important person – you!

People don’t know how we do the things we do, how we live the life we live. They tell us we’re strong. They tell us we’re special because special kids are given to special people. They say these things not be condescending but to be helpful. Of course, we know the truth. We are mothers and, for better or for worse, our number-one priority is our kids. We love them unconditionally and will move mountains to ensure their success in life. We do the things we do – the advocating, the educating, the therapies – because we want the best for our children. It’s not about being strong or special. It’s about being a mom. It’s about making sure our kids are safe. It’s about making sure our kids are accepted. It’s about making sure our kids are loved.

So here’s to us, fellow Momma Bears! We work hard and we love hard. We are determined, loyal, compassionate, and selfless. We smile even when we feel like giving up and crying. We push on through hard times and we never ever give up on our children. We live this life because it is the only one we know. We do it humbly but also with pride.

So, let’s do us all a favor and take that well-deserved time-out. Hide in a closet for five minutes if you must, but do what you need to do to take care of yourself. You are worth it. I am worth it. WE are worth it!

Hope you all had a Happy Mother’s Day!
