The Incredible 5-Point Scale and When My Worries Get Too Big! were written about the same time and both are now in Second Edition. The scale book is really the source for understanding why you might want to use a scale, the evidence and theory behind the scale, and how to use a 5-point scale to teach social and emotional concepts.
When My Worries Get Too Big! is a children's book written to teach young children about the 5- point anxiety scale and how to relax and keep your worries little. This book has not only one awards, it was even mentioned in Time magazine!
A 5 is Against the Law! is a workbook for adolescents and young adults who have difficulties understanding social boundaries. The book uses the 5-point scale to clarify a number of common social misunderstandings by giving an example of how the misunderstanding might look, showing how a teaching scale might look for that situation, and suggesting an activity that might help to generalize the social information addressed.
A 5 Could Make Me Lose Control! is an activity developed for both young children and others who have difficulty communicating verbally when the topic involves emotions. There are 5 pockets numbered 1-5 and some picture/word cards indicating various environments at school or at home. There are also blank cards, and you can always make more with some common card stock. The idea is to teach the person to rate various common environments in relation to how that environment makes her feel: this never bothers me; this bothers me a little bit; this could make me nervous; this could make me mad, or this could make me lose control! The activity includes recording scales to keep track of what situations cause the person to feel certain ways. This is valuable information since individuals on the ASD spectrum often have great difficulty accurately understanding or reporting their own emotions. This activity can be a part of a Functional Behavior Assessment since it helps to elicit an individual's perspective regarding antecedent conditions that would not otherwise be recognized by the parent, teacher or caregiver.
This bundle will also include a 24' x 36', full-color, dual-sided and erasable 5-Point Scale and Anxiety Curve Poster that allows students to identify the state of their emotions at various points of the day.
