Successful Problem-Solving for High-Functioning Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Many individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have difficulty coming up with effective ways to solve problems.  "Successful Problem-Solving for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders" teaches how to integrate the book's problem-solving chart into classrooms, homes, and social skills groups to help individuals with ASD to learn to problem solve effectively.  The book uses "The Incredible 5-Point Scale" as a resource to get individuals in the right frame of mind. Foreword by Brenda Smith Myles, PhD.

Kerry Mataya, MSEd, is the founder of Autism Asperger Syndrome Consulting Group, LLC, and Asperger Connection, Inc. She received her master's degree from the University of Kansas with an emphasis on autism spectrum disorders.

Penney Patterson Owens, MEd, BCBA, works as a behavioral and educational consultant. She has taught in the classroom as a special education teacher and is now working to educate teachers, parents, and students about positive behavior support and behavior analysis. Customer Review: Amazon Customer - As an Occupational Therapist that supports school-aged children with ASD I found this book to be extremely helpful. Problem solving is such a crucial, yet complex (and thus overwhelming) skill to teach. Authors Kerry Mataya and Penney Owens have provided a resource that is very easy to read and even easier to implement immediately. I received the book, read it that evening and started using it the very next morning with a student. The book uses a simple (but very smart) visual support called the "Problem Solving Chart" to help the user begin to visualize the problem solving process. The visual encourages the user to first identify the problem. Then there are 4 choices provided for solving the problem: Talk it out and Compromise; Let It Go and Move On; Seek Help from an Adult; Let it Bother You. The book then proceeds to give very concrete ways for developing and/or practicing each of these choices. I think the power of this visual support is that it gives the problem-solver a choice. They are not told exactly what to do. They decide. They have the control. I know the student I mentioned earlier greatly appreciated this aspect of choice---which is now attributing to his motivation to try this new strategy. And this resource is so practical that the parents were able to quickly read the book and are using the Problem Solving Chart at home too!! I must not forget a giant THANK YOU to authors Kerry Mataya and Penney Owens. Not only have they provided a practical framework for enhancing problem solving skills, they provided an entire chapter dedicated to Data Collection and Assessment. The chapter provides a list of potential IEP goals related to problem solving. Also provided are great forms for tracking progress. For example, there is a pre-test and post-test to be filled out before and after implementation of the Problem Solving Chart. As a school-based professional, the pressure is on to monitor progress and collect frequent data. This chapter will help to make the job easier for sure! I highly recommend this book to anyone that supports individuals struggling with problem-solving skills!!!

Customer Review: F. Gallegos - Very slim book, but the concept that it teaches is helpful for aspie or neurotypical. I will be using this concept with both of my children. Very glad that it comes with pages that can be copied. The only thing that it is missing is a copying page for the symbols rather than the words chart.

Customer Review: Helen Schlegel - I know one of the authors and that said, volunteer as well that I work with children of all kinds in a community mental health program, so I am not speaking from a completely personal stand point. This book is a great help when needing ideas parents can utilize at home to reinforce and promote a common behavioral thread for children to help them maximize their abilities to learn and interact at home and in a learning environment. The ideas and illustration are uncomplicated and easily understood not to mention well explained. I find it to be a very useful tool in my work because the suggestions can be tweaked to fit the situation presented and personalized by the parents who are their children's first teachers.
